5 Spiritual Blessings Part V
Sealed with the Holy Spirit
“11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:11-14 NIV
As we’ve been exploring Ephesians 1, we’ve discovered some spiritual blessings that God provides us with as believers. We discovered the following:
You are chosen for salvation. Verse 4
You are adopted as His sons with full benefits. Verse 5
You are a recipient of God’s glorious grace. Verse 6
You are redeemed by His blood. Verse 7
Today, as we continue to explore the spiritual blessings that we are blessed with, we come to Ephesians 1:11-14. Here’s what we discover:
You are sealed by the Holy Spirit. Verse 11-14
While this sounds great, what does it mean to be “were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit”?
To understand this better, I thought it would be important to check with New Testament Greek Scholar, Kenneth Wuest.
He writes “the word ‘sealed’ is sphragizo, ‘to set a seal upon, mark with a seal.’” Wuest further states “The sealing is the last thing that must be done prior to delivering.” According to Wuest, the Holy Spirit is Himself the seal of the believer.
Here’s what being sealed by the Holy Spirit means in the Scriptures. Being sealed signifies:
1 – A finished transaction – John 17:4, 19:30
“4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” John 17:4 NIV
Being sealed with the Holy Spirit signifies that the transaction has been completed. The final payment is finished. Jesus Christ paid the price in full for our sin and transgressions on the cross which is why John 19:30 says the following.
“30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” John 19:30 NIV
The Holy Spirit’s presence with us signifies that the debt has been paid in full.
2 – Security – 2 Timothy 2:19
“19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” 2 Timothy 2:19 NIV
The next thing being sealed with the Holy Spirit means is that we now have eternal security. Do you ever question your salvation based on your feelings or some poor decisions you’ve made? Paul explains in Ephesians that because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, not only is the transaction done, but we can now find security in God’s completed work.
3 – Ownership – Ephesians 4:30
“30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30 NIV
Lastly, being sealed by the Holy Spirit indicates that we are under new ownership. We were once slaves to sin, but no longer. We were once slaves to guilt and condemnation, but no longer. We were once slaves to un-righteousness, but no longer. God places the Holy Spirit in us to take up residence permanently – and to signify we are under new ownership!
When are we sealed with the Holy Spirit? The Bible says the when we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit becomes our seals or guarantees that we are children of God and the Holy Spirit will NEVER leave us. NEVER.
The moment a person trusts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the Bible says that the Holy Spirit seals, or guarantees, that individual is a child of God. The sealing of the Holy Spirit confirms that we are under new ownership and the fact that the Holy Spirit will never leave us. Never.
Thank You Lord Jesus that I am sealed with the Holy Spirit. It is a finished transaction. It gives me security and reminds me that my life is under new ownership – good ownership! In the strong name of Jesus Christ, amen.
