A Divine Outline of Revelation

19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”  Revelation 1:19-20 NIV

While many people find Revelation to be a difficult book, it is the only book in the New Testament that contains an inspired outline of its contents.  This outline is found in Revelation 1:19.

Jesus tells John to write three things.

Part I – What you have seen…  This refers to the vision John had of Jesus in Revelation 1.

Part II – What is now… This refers to the special messages to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3.

Part III – What will take place later… This refers to the descriptions of events that are yet to occur in chapters 4-22.

Here is a further breakdown of the book.

• Chapter 1 The vision of the resurrected Jesus

• Chapters 2-3 The Church’s history

• Chapters 4-5 The Rapture

• Chapters 6-19 The Great Tribulation

• Chapter 20 The Millennium reign of Jesus Christ

• Chapters 21-22 The new heaven and new earth revealed

This is what we will cover in Revelation.  We have explored what John had seen.  Before we go on to explore the things that will take place later, we must pause to listen to the words of Jesus and what He reveals to His churches.

As we study Revelation, there are three challenges

1 – Let the Word challenge you to holy living in an unholy world.

2 – Let the Word challenge you to have a greater urgency in evangelism.

3 – Let the Word cause you to be more missionary minded to fulfill the Great Commission before Christ returns.

Let’s get started.

Lord Jesus thank You for Your Word and Your Revelation.  May I be a good steward of Your revelation to this world.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
