Jesus is… the Word, by Ty Tamasaka
“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.” John 1:1-5 NIV
I’ve heard that the average man uses 2,000 words per day. Of those 2,000 words spoken throughout the day for men, I wonder how many of those words we speak reflect the heart and mind of God. How many of those are words we would rather God not have heard.
Then there are women. The average woman uses 5,000 words per day. I’d pose the same question. I wonder how many of those 5,000 words reflect the heart and mind of God. I wonder how many of those 5,000 words they would rather God not have heard.
In Matthew 15:11Jesus reveals to us that our words reveal what is in our hearts and our minds.
“What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” Matthew 15:11 NIV
When John points out that Jesus is the Word, he is pointing out that Jesus Christ is the One who reveals what is in the heart and mind of God. Here are some other important things to know about Word.
1 – God created everything through His Word.
“ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Genesis 1:1-3 NIV
2 –This Word is Jesus Christ.
“16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:16 NIV
“5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.” 2 Peter 3:5 NIV
3 – Although God can be known in part through nature and history, He can only be known fully in Jesus Christ.
“1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” Hebrews 1:1-2 NIV
4 – Jesus Christ is the alpha and omega; the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Jesus is the beginning and the end.
“13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” Revelation 22:13 NIV
5 –Jesus Christ as the Word brings grace and truth.
“14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:14-17 NIV
6 – If men will not receive Him, the same Word will come in wrath and judgment.
“13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.” Revelation 19:13 NIV
Jesus is the Word. The next time you think you need more of Jesus in your life, pick Him up. Pick up the Bible. It is the written Word of God. If you want to experience the mind and heart of God, know that it is revealed in His Word. Jesus Christ is the living, incarnate Word of God. If you need more of Jesus in your life, make more time to be with the Word.
Thank You Jesus that You are the Word of God. You are the heard and mind of God made known to man… made known to me. Thank You that in the pages of Your Word, I can find Your heart, mind, will and desire for my life. In the name of Jesus Christ, the Word of God, amen.
