Living Life In Christ – Romans 8, by Ty Tamasaka
“8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a]free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1 NIV
If we want to secure today’s potential, we must leave yesterday behind. Romans 8:1 speaks to those of us who have a hard time letting go of our yesterdays. Romans 8:1 tells assures us there is no condemnation from our past.
Isn’t it interesting? Paul does not say there is no condemnation for Christians. He says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. When he uses the word in, Paul uses the same term used in Genesis 7:16.
“16 The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in.” Genesis 7:16 NIV (emphasis mine)
In the days of Noah, God didn’t make Noah and his family stay outside of the ark holding on tightly for dear life. He placed Noah and his family in the safety of the ark. He shut the doors and kept them safe in the walls of the ark.
The ark of the believer today is Jesus Christ. Paul teaches us that we face no condemnation in Jesus Christ. He assures us that it’s not a matter of holding on tight and hoping we can keep from sinking despite our past. Paul says it’s not a matter of how bad our past mistakes are or how bad the decisions we made have been. “There is therefore, now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” he says.
Yesterday my family and I bought a barrel of chocolate swirl ice cream – one of my favorite flavors. If you look at the ingredients on the side of the barrel, you will recognize how sinful that barrel of ice cream really is. It is filled with calories, sugar, and fat. Although it is sinfully tasty, the ice cream is now buried in me. When you look at me, you no longer see the ice cream. The ice cream is in me.
That’s how believers are in Christ. All of your sinful tendencies are in Christ. God no longer sees them. This is a great truth to meditate on when you feel insecure about your past. When God looks at you, He no longer sees your sin, shame, and failures. He sees Jesus Christ because you are in Christ. He no longer sees you in your sin, but in His Son. Isn’t that a beautiful thought? Enjoy the words of Paul one more time, ““8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Thank You Jesus that there is therefore now no condemnation found in You. Lord there are so many times I find my identity in things, positions, or what others think of me. Thank You for reminding me today that I can find my identity in You. In Christ… amen.
