Keep Winning Your Spouse’s Heart – Song of Songs 6

Keep Winning Your Spouse’s Heart

Why would you gaze on the Shulammite
as on the dance of Mahanaim?[m]”
 Song of Songs 6:13 NIV

“7 [n]How beautiful your sandaled feet,
    O prince’s daughter!
Your graceful legs are like jewels,
the work of an artist’s hands.
Your navel is a rounded goblet
    that never lacks blended wine.
Your waist is a mound of wheat
    encircled by lilies.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
like twin fawns of a gazelle.
Your neck is like an ivory tower.
Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon
by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
    looking toward Damascus.
Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.
    Your hair is like royal tapestry;
the king is held captive by its tresses.
How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
    my love, with your delights!
Your stature is like that of the palm,
and your breasts like clusters of fruit.
I said, “I will climb the palm tree;
I will take hold of its fruit.”
May your breasts be like clusters of grapes on the vine,
the fragrance of your breath like apples,
and your mouth like the best wine.”
  Song of Songs 7:1-9 NIV

I think few people would argue that the longer a couple is married, the easier it is to begin to take your spouse for granted.  We see here in Song of Songs 7, that though Solomon and Shulamith have been married for some time, Solomon, whom we remember as the man with the greatest wisdom of his day, took the time to continually know his wife.

We see in these verses that Solomon takes the time to know intimately and celebrate the details of his wife

It is so critical and important to know that we need to pursue our spouses EVEN AFTER THE WEDDING DAY!  Too many times we invest great amounts of time and preparation to have a beautiful wedding day, but we don’t take the time to continue to invest in a beautiful marriage.

Solomon knew every square inch of his wife and he describes her from her feet to the top of her head.  It is important to notice that the way he describes her here, is similar to Song of Songs 1, when they are just starting out.  Here is the lesson for this devotion.  If you want the relationship to be like what is was before, we need to make the time and effort, to do the things we used to do before.

Men, you must become an authority of your wives – There is no other way to do this than by spending time with your mate.  Wives, you must become the authority on your husbands.

We also know that sadly, that in the ending of Solomon’s life, he marries a number of women, develops a harem, and turns away from God.  Just because you start well, doesn’t mean that you will end well.  That takes continuous investment and work.  I think if Solomon could speak through time, he would remind spouses today, KEEP WINNING YOUR SPOUSE’S HEART OVER AND YOU WILL CHANGE NOT ONLY YOUR SPOUSE’S LIFE, BUT ALSO YOUR OWN.

Make the time to start dating again – Someone once pointed out that babysitters are cheaper than divorce lawyers.

Make strategic efforts to woo your spouse again – Buy her flowers, take a day off to spend together, rub his shoulders – and if it leads to something else – enjoy it!

Take up a hobby together.

Leave a love note for your wife and take her to her favorite restaurant.

Initiate sex with your husband.  Husbands love that.

Serve others together at the church.

Make time to spend with other couples.

In the text today, we’ve looked at what each of us can do to deepen our relationships, the only question left to answer is – Are you willing to try it out?  It’s hard work to continually pursue your spouse and invest in your marriage, but it is worth it.

Now it’s up to you.

Holy Spirit you bring us back to Jesus as our first love… bring us back to our spouse as our second love.  Open our eyes to see how to rebuild the passion and re-ignite the romance in our marriage.  Amen.

  1. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% certain. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Kudos|

    1. This blog and my leadership blog ( were all done without spending a penny. It did cost a lot of time designing some graphics and writing though.

You can get a free blog at You’ll have select the name, and can do everything from your mac or PC. I created the pictures on my mac mini and inserted them into the header and the background of my blogs.
