Speaking Life to your Wife – Song of Songs 4

Speaking Life to your Wife

  10 “How much more pleasing is your love than wine,
and the fragrance of your perfume
    more than any spice!
11 Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride;
    milk and honey are under your tongue.
The fragrance of your garments
    is like the fragrance of Lebanon.
12 You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride;
    you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain.
13 Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates
    with choice fruits,
    with henna and nard,
14     nard and saffron,
    calamus and cinnamon,
    with every kind of incense tree,
    with myrrh and aloes
    and all the finest spices.
15 You are[j] a garden fountain,
    a well of flowing water
    streaming down from Lebanon.”
  Song of Songs 4:10-15 NIV

Husbands do you compliment your wives?  That is what Solomon is teaching us in Song of Songs 4.  Compliment your wives verbally.  Honor her by speaking well of her to her and to others.  In our culture, because marriage can be so difficult and trying at times, it is so easy and expected to crack jokes about our spouses.  It is almost expected that husbands and wives speak critically of each other and speak ill of each other to friends or co-workers.  Solomon teaches that men are not to complain about her being your “old lady” or the “ball and chain.”

Below are some practical ways to compliment your wife based from Song of Songs 4.

Tell your wife of her beauty and remind her that she is not just your bride, but your best friend.  V 10

10 “How much more pleasing is your love than wine,
and the fragrance of your perfume
    more than any spice!

Tell your wife she is a great kisser.  V 11

11 Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride;
    milk and honey are under your tongue.
The fragrance of your garments
    is like the fragrance of Lebanon.

Tell your wife you love the way she smells.   V 12

12 You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride;
    you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain.

Tell your wife you are thankful that her love is exclusively for you.  V 13-15

“13 Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates
    with choice fruits,
    with henna and nard,
14     nard and saffron,
    calamus and cinnamon,
    with every kind of incense tree,
    with myrrh and aloes
    and all the finest spices.
15 You are[j] a garden fountain,
    a well of flowing water
    streaming down from Lebanon.”

Husbands are to focus on serving your wife rather than yourself. V 16

While it is great to affirm our wives with encouraging words, we husbands need to live out that encouragement for our wives and give our all to build them up.  That is what Jesus did for His bride – the church.  That is our calling as Husbands.

Holy Spirit empower me not only to share kind and encouraging words to my wife but to reinforce it by my actions – how I treat her – how I love her – how I relate to her.  May I love her as You love Your church and gave EVERYTHING for her.  In the matchless name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
