Discovering a Message from the Lord – Living Between Verses 2 & 5, Jeremiah 18
“This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” Jeremiah 18:1-2 NIV
“5 Then the word of the Lord came to me.” Jeremiah 18:5 NIV
We find that when God was going to teach the Prophet Jeremiah a lesson about the relationship with God and His people, the Spirit of God led Jeremiah to the Potter’s house. God could have just spoken the message to Jeremiah, but instead chose to lead him to a place where he could understand the message better. Sometimes, the Spirit of God doesn’t speak to us directly or immediately, but rather leads us to a place where we must first be obedient so that we will be better able to understand Him.
It is interesting that the Scripture does not suggest that Jeremiah knew why he was going to the Potter’s house. All it says is in verse 2 is that Jeremiah was directed to “go down to the potter’s house, and there I (the Lord) will give you my message.”
In verse 5, after Jeremiah was obedient in going to the Potter’s house, the text says, “5 Then the word of the Lord came to me.”
There are times that we want to “wait upon the Lord” to hear Him speak, but instead we, like Jeremiah, need to be obedient to do the unusual or the unorthodox, to really receive a message from the Lord. I think it is reasonable to suggest that if Jeremiah did not obey the prompting of the Lord in verse 2, to go to the Potter’s house, he would not have received the message from the Lord in verse 5.
There are many times that we may be living between Jeremiah 18:1-2 and Jeremiah 18:5. There are times when we want to hear from the Lord, but in order to receive the message we must first be walking in obedience to His Spirit. God has the message to share, but He calls the messenger to be prepared. Living between verses 2 and 5 can be frustrating because we want the Word of God now. Living between serves 2 and 5 can be discouraging because we don’t know how long the timeframe will be. Living between verses 2 and 5 can be challenging because this is where our faith in God is tested and our patience is developed.
There are great messages that the Lord wants to speak in verse 5, but it will be revealed AS we walk in obedience to His word in verse 2 today. In what area of your life do you need to be walking in obedience TODAY, so that He can reveal His Word tomorrow?
Holy Spirit lead me to walk in obedience today, so that I can clearly discern and hear Your Word tomorrow. Amen.
